Masaru Takano

A Vision Called “Primeval Memory” the Painting of Masaru Takano
By Koichiro Noji (Art curator)

A delicate color we might call "predawn twilight" is very deliberately soaked into the Japanese paper. On this float countless interwoven lines which appear to fly away even as they meet, increasing at the points of intersection. However, those lines do not seem to be enclosing an area to express any concrete shape. Therefore, there is no composition of discrete forms in the picture. Nor is there a central motif. Overall it is merely that a loosely closing (or opening) space has emerged.
A loosely-defined spot on the surface invites our gaze to rest and thus gives rise to a certain nostalgia. It is as if Takano's artwork were a nerve cell that had just originated in a primal field. Moving, growing, it eventually lands in the pit of the memory of life itself-the work conjures such primeval imagery in our minds. So this painting which first looks inorganic gradually changes to an organic vision in our minds. It is as if the artist wants to paint something that has emerged from absolute nothingness. That would be the scene before light or space, before all the varied life forms --a scene like a confused memory.
But Takano's work is not "painting as a sum total of unconscious brushstrokes." Nor is it the depiction of actual concepts for their own sake. This abstract organic world, depicted with a vigorous brush full of theatricality, is the sort of endless stirring we associate with the artist's phrase, "primeval memory." Therefore, standing before this work we feel that we are peering through a window into infinity, where there are no boundaries between self and other.
